December 13, 2022 – North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is one of 51 attorneys general pushing for action from the FCC to cut down on robotexts. He said scammers stole more than $86 million through text scams in 2020 alone.
The group is supporting the FCC’s proposal to require that phone companies block texts from invalid, unassigned or unused numbers. Stein said he’s already seen some results when they took similar action against robocalls.
“I know we are absolutely inundated by robocalls, but things like, now you’ll get a message that says ‘spam alert’ or ‘robocall alert,’ those are changes that we have won in negotiations with phone companies,” Stein said.
Stein said it’s important to make sure you know the source of a text message before you click any link or provide any information.
In 2021, the FCC received more than 15,000 consumer complaints about unwanted texts.
