June 12, 2026 – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined a bipartisan group of 40 attorneys general calling on Congress to continue funding the Legal Services Corporation, which provides civil legal aid to low-income Americans.
In a letter to congressional leaders, the coalition urged lawmakers to include funding for the organization in the fiscal year 2027 appropriations bill. Jackley said continued support helps ensure access to justice regardless of a person’s income.
The Legal Services Corporation, created by Congress in 1974, funds a network of 129 legal aid organizations with more than 900 offices nationwide. Nearly 95% of its federal funding goes directly to local providers that help people with civil legal issues involving housing, family safety, consumer protection, veterans’ benefits and disaster recovery.
The bipartisan effort was led by the attorneys general of Colorado, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, with attorneys general from more than 30 other states and territories signing on. A copy of the letter to Congress is available through the National Association of Attorneys General.
