October 10, 2025 – Meta is under scrutiny from Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond and a coalition of state attorneys general after reports that Hamas militants used Facebook and Instagram to share live footage of violent incidents, including murders, during an October 2023 terror attack. According to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office release, the coalition sent a letter to Meta requesting an explanation of how such content was allowed to circulate on its platforms.

The letter cited a specific case in which a video of a grandmother’s murder was posted on the victim’s own Facebook page. Drummond stated that it was deeply concerning that Meta may have allowed such content to spread during the attacks. The coalition emphasized the need to prevent terrorist groups from using social media to promote violence.

Attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Texas joined Drummond in signing the letter. They asked Meta to provide details about its policies on violent and extremist content, as well as the actions taken in response to the October 2023 events. The company was also asked to describe any new measures put in place to prevent similar misuse of its platforms.

Meta has been given until November 10 to respond to the coalition’s inquiries and clarify how it plans to prevent the spread of violent or terrorist content in the future.
