September 28, 2021 – Hawaiʻi Attorney General Clare Connors is leading a coalition of 14 states and their attorneys general that is supporting the efforts of two local counties suing major oil companies for their contribution to climate change.
The City and County of Honolulu and the County of Maui sued ExxonMobil, Chevron, and BP for knowingly misleading consumers about the harmful effects of fossil fuels.
Although the case was originally brought to the state court, the oil companies removed the cases to federal district court.
The coalition of 14 attorneys general is supporting the two counties’ lawsuit — saying the trial should take place in state court.
The decision is currently pending in the Ninth Circuit court of appeals.
