July 3, 2025 – Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and a bipartisan coalition of 19 other Attorneys General, along with the U.S. Department of Justice, successfully countered Apple’s attempt to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed on March 21, 2024, accuses Apple of restricting competition by making it difficult to leave the iPhone ecosystem.

The Court’s decision allows the coalition’s lawsuit to proceed, affirming the right of State Attorney General offices to sue companies for anticompetitive practices harming state citizens.

The Court cited quotes from Apple executives, including one about not improving text compatibility between iPhones and Androids, to support claims of Apple’s intent to monopolize.

Ellison said, “Smartphones are an essential part of modern life, but Apple’s conduct has entrenched the iPhone’s dominance at the cost of making all smartphones more expensive, less versatile, and less useful.”

Ellison expressed pride in the coalition’s efforts and emphasized the importance of holding Apple accountable.
